3 Easy and Quick Breakfast Ideas

Being a mom, working a day job and a business makes my time valuable.  I have to constantly think strategically on how I spend my day.  The morning rush during the week as you can imagine is crazy.  Getting the kids ready for school and me heading to work.  Staying up late working on the business, I hardly can wake up!

I used to just load on coffee and get on with my day until such time.  Not anymore.  Since I quit my intake of brewed coffee and replaced it with Chai Tea I have found 3 ways to make quick and easy breakfast meals in the morning to start my day.

You can eat your eggs in many ways, but boiling is a simple way to create a healthy snack that can be taken on the go.
— Livingstrong.com

There are great benefits in eating hard boiled eggs.  Livingstrong.com talks the many benefits of eating hard boiled eggs.  Great for the eyes, nails, hair, has weight benefits and is good for your eyes.   You can read the article here.  I love to have mine with fresh avocado and toast.

Why shop at your local shop already made yogurt parfait when you can make your own at home. I love greek yogurt and I mix it with my own oats and fruits for the perfect healthy parfait. You get a good dose of protein, calcium, potassium and much more.  Check out this article about the health benefits of yogurt via WebMd here.

One of my kids favorites too! 3 minutes maximum preparation, these instant packs are always in my purse or in my desk drawer at work.  These are fantastic. A powerful antioxidant, oats should be part of your diet I would suggest.  This article here talks about all the great health benefits of this grain.

So what are your favorite quick breakfast ideas? Are any of my 3 yours? A good healthy breakfast in the morning is key. Make sure you have it planned in your daily routine!

I had to Quit Coffee

I've been suffering from chronic headaches and really painful cramping during ovulation. My doctor has been telling me to decrease my intake of caffeine as a result to help alleviate these issues. I never took action until now.

I started drinking coffee back in college. Rushing to the bus to make it on time to class.  Needed another cup mid day to get me through work.  You name it. I would drink coffee like it was my life saver.

Now that I haven't had my caffeine fix drinking 5 cups of coffee for the past couple of days, I am realizing that it was all about how I was perceiving what it was doing to me.  Felt like "peer pressure" in a way. To me.  Don't get me wrong, I love the smell of fresh ground coffee early in the morning. But other than that, it does not really do much.

I spent 2 days researching online how I could take this habit out of my lifestyle and I remembered having Chai Tea in India for the first time for breakfast and falling in love with it. I know you must be thinking, really Martine, where have you been living all this time and you never knew about Chai Tea?!?!? Well, the truth is I knew about it but I perceived it like another blend tea.

I was completely wrong.  It is the best decision I have ever made.  The spices, the smell ...awakes the same senses coffee did to me.  I went crazy in the supermarket looking for the best Chai Tea. I even went to my local Indian spice market to find just the perfect one.

I found out that Chai Tea does have caffeine. However you would have to drink 3 cups to replace the same intake of caffeine you'd get in a single cup of coffee. Pretty amazing right?

I brew mine 5 to 6 minutes.  Yes, I like it that strong.  It's my new cup that gets me going in the morning and I no longer have a mid day caffeine fix need.

You too you can decrease your intake of coffee caffeine.  Any spicy tea such as perpermit or any Black tea such as Chai tea like I did are great options.

Thanksgiving Curated at Target

With Thanksgiving approaching, I am exploring not to use my same old boring white dinnerware and instead bring in some flavor into the decor without it being too festive because Christmas is still happening and we can have all the glitz for that. I cannot help it, but when I am at Target the inspiration in me just wakes up. It's one of my favorite places to shop. I love it when I go there for one thing and end up with a cart full of random products.

I created 3 table settings looks with all Target products.  Let's virtual shop!

I am really loving the Glitz Glam fashion (The ShortsThe Dress) I have put together so far and thought of translating it into the home.

The rich metallic tones of gold on the flatware, charger and even the "Thankful" Placemat, drives the perfect palette for one of the most heart warming celebrations of the year.

Vibrant and joyful, this fun palette makes the season smile.

I love the shades of green, orange and yellow together.

This set up feels like an everyday dinner table decor but yet makes it very Thanksgiving appropriate with the wood accent details and dried flowers.

I am calling this one Gentlemanly Made not because I am suggesting this setup to only be for men...really because of the Matte coatings on all the tabletop including the flatware.

I can totally rock this look for my Thanksgiving.  The shades of midnight black gives it a strong personality yet makes this set sophisticated.

I can spend hours at Target walking down the aisles. If you are a Target fan like me, I'd love to hear from you.

Splurge Bakery - The Place where your Culinary Arts Skills come to Life

My daughter just turned 10 and over the weekend we celebrated her milestone birthday at a Bakery. Cupcake Wars, Next Great Baker and Cake Boss are the only shows she watches all day everyday. Splurge Bakery was the perfect place for her party!

Before frosting the cupcakes for the Cupcake Wars Music Theme competition, the kids had to make their own Pizza.

They had so much fun shaping their dough, throwing flour all over the place and just being kids!

They ended up creating all sorts of shapes and they sure enjoyed eating them too!

Next, it was time for dessert. Two teams were created. Just like Cupcake Wars on the FoodNetwork, a theme was selected and the Birthday girl decided that it would be MUSIC. Each team had to creactively frost and decorate their cupcakes to reflect the theme.

And creactivity is sure what we got! With all the gummies, sprinkles and swedish fish, the kids were in Heaven. It was like Halloween came a week early or something!

Julie had this fantastic idea to create Splurge Bakery in 2006. Everything the Bakery does is baked to order and handmade, using the finest ingredients.

I am so happy we had our daughter's birthday party there.

A Caribbean Girl at a Caribbean Food Festival

I am a foodie that is true. However Caribbean cuisine will always stay close to my heart. When I found out about the NYC Caribbean Food Festival, I knew I had to be there. Met familiar faces and new ones too. Place was insanely crowded.

It's getting cold out and experiencing the hot flavors of the islands in every corner of the room was fantastic and truly warmed everyone. The music, the crowd and the food was just awesome.

I enjoyed my plate from Kombit Bar & Restaurant. They specialize in Haitian dining.

Then I came across this awesome new company: Kreyòl Kwizin. They sell Organic jars of Pikliz pronounced peek-leez. Every Haitian household has this in their home. It's Cabbage, carrots, chiles and other vegetables that are soaked in vinegar to make a relish. Perfect side dish for any Haitian dish.

This is Hardy and I taking a picture with his awesome products. Check out the website

Than I had to say hello and bring home some of Nadege Fleurimond's delicious cooking.

Nadege Fleurimond is the owner of Fleurimond Catering. Her awesome Cookbook Haiti Uncovered was on sale at the event.

I had to bring home Nadege's Bread Pudding with Kremas.  So so good!!!!!

And yes! Les Ateliers Placide was looking just so Fabulous!

The table had an array of unique Haitian work including my Handmade Jewelry line Kaderique

Next stop was the Haiti Cultural Exchange table. This is a nonprofit organization that presents and promotes the cultural expressions of the Haitian people. It was through one of their amazing events 9 months ago that I had the opportunity to launch my handmade jewelry line Kaderique.

Finally had to say hello to Fashionista, Wardrobe Stylist and amazing Fashion Blogger Luxe Le Blanc. Sign up to her newsletter on her website

Overall, really great event. Glad I came out. Was so refreshing to see all my friends and meet new faces.

Tru - Astoria, NY

Hubby and I were in Astoria the other night running some errands. We needed a quick bite but were not interested in stopping at a deli or a diner. So we walked down Ditmas Boulevard and Tru Astoria was truly the place for us to be!

We started off with the Grilled Skirt Steak and Pineapple Salad. The mesclun greens, avocado, grilled pineapple, goat cheese, skirt steak and pineapple vinaigrette was so good. Light yet tasty, this salad was just enough for the 2 of us. The manager even stopped by and told us it was one of their best dishes on the menu.

We had to order the special they had that night. I mean look at it! The selection of meats, cheese, dipping sauce with the pita bread was again the perfect dish to share.

I had to take a picture with our awesome waitress Silvia. She made us feel like home especially when I accidentally spilled my wine all over the table....no pictures of that...couldn't do it lol

I am going back to Tru when I am in Astoria. It's on my list for places to go in the Spring. Why? Because they have outdoor seating and I love that!

In Astoria NY soon? Head out to Tru for Brunch, Lunch, Dinner or just to grab a drink with your friends. Really cool spot! Tru website|Facebook|Yelp

But First... Mokafe!

I am a huge coffee lover. It's starts my day, everyday. I thought I had my favorite coffee brand in my house until I had Mokafe.

This coffee is made in my home country in the mountains of Beaumont in Haiti.

For those who do not know, Haiti was at the forefront of coffee production, before the title was taken by Brazilian coffee producers. Haitain coffee, revered around the globe as some of the best coffee in the world, is currently not represented by any of the consumer brands that coffee drinkers would find at their local market or coffee shop—until now.

All coffee sold by Kafe Pa Nou is classified as Direct Trade, meaning that the roaster works directly with the farmer to increase the overall quality and value of the coffee. This model guarantees the social sustainability of the farmer, economic growth of the farm, and encourages environmental sustainability, and community development.

I have tossed my old coffee and have now adopted Mokafe!

I drink it hot or cold.

Here's how I make my Mokafe Ice Latte! I brew my Mokafe. I let it cool down for a few minutes, before I place it in an ice cube tray.

With a few drops of cold milk! Perfection!

Mokafe is obviously widely available in Haiti. But you can shop online at www.kafepanou.com or find a location near you.

A Caribbean Tasting Menu - Yummy!

Nothing brings people together like the tasting language of good food. Chef Deborah Burchell "Chef D" and her husband Mr Bryan Burchell "Mr B"'s Caribbean Tasting Menu event was spectacular.

We started off this feast with a delicious Cod Fish Fritters with a Tamarind sauce.

Every single bite was perfect. The best part is when that tamarind sauce soaked into the fritter. So, so good.

Then we had the Trinidad Brown Stew Chicken with Coconut Rice. That creole brown sauce was to die for.

The stew chicken leg and tight cutup so moist and just perfect with the delicious rice. Can't have a Caribbean tasting without rice and peas right?

Well let me tell you, this Curry Chicken served with Rice and Peas was by far one of my favorite dishes.

Could be because I am myself a caribbean girl and this to me is a staple.

I personally love red peas. I could taste the spices in every single bite and the aroma of the curry brought me to another place. Just excellent!

The next dish was the Herbed Tilapia with Tropical Salsa.

The papaya and mango citrus salsa had a little spice and it was the perfect mate for the grilled tilapia. The fish was not flaky at all and every bite awakened my taste buds!!!!  I was a happy girl.

Next up was the Jerk Chicken Breast with Warm Cabbage Salad.

The cabbage was fresh, light, crunchy and I almost ate it alone that's how good it was. But that jerk chicken? guess? yes....DE-LI-CIOUS

Next up was the Rasta Pasta with Pumpkin Sauce. What do I have to say about this one? Well...

...you get it. Clearly, it was all SO GOOD! and WELL WORTH IT. Hope I made you hungry and inspired you to want to cook some caribbean food!!! Well, easy. You can purchase the Cookbook written by the Burchell's entitled : Mastering The Art Of Caribbean Cooking.

There are over 125 CARIBBEAN recipes with tips, secret and techniques. Recipes for Vegans and Vegetarians are included too. "Chef D" and her husband "Mr B" also run cooking classes. Visit their site for more info www.trinisoulcooking.biz

Moonshine - Millburn NJ

Need a place to wine and dine in New Jersey? Check out Moonshine Supper Club.

This is a great date night or girl's night out spot. Atmosphere is casual, classic yet modern at the same time. Feels like you are right in Manhattan...

Everything I love was right in front of me and I could not get enough of it. 😩

Every single bite, washed down with a delicious sip of malbec, accompanied with great laughs made the evening a night to remember.

Moonshine definitely made it on my best restaurants to go to list. I'm planning to go back for their brunch. Cannot wait!

Thrift Shop DIY Home Decor

I love visiting my local thrift shop once in a while.  It's like playing treasure hunt.  With a little imagination, you can achieve so much at a very low cost.

I picked up this Hurricane lamp for $3.99. It had some scratches and the gold plated finish was damaged.

But overall, it was in very good shape.  So I decided to stop at my local Home Depot and Dollar store to create my DIY.

I spray painted it with a metallic gold color outside and let air dry for about 3 hours.

Look at the results! Just fantastic, I think! From the Dollar store, I bought a bunch of artificial flowers. Sure I love fresh ones too, But these were really pretty plus for $10, I was very pleased walking out of the store.

At Walmart, I bought a foam bowl for $3 to use as a base for my flower arrangement. I am no expert trust me😩  I just randomly pinned each flower after using a wire cutter into the foam.

I am very pleased with the finish product! I think I will be making more of these in the near future to decorate my home.  This is also a great project when you need to decorate for an event or even for the Holidays. The best part is, think about it, any base will do. Paint goes a long way!

Purple Yam - Brooklyn , NY

Purple Yam is a small Asian restaurant with a traditional Filipino flare located in Brooklyn, NY.

I went there for brunch to meet Creative Director, Designer and Founder of KADOKÉLÉ.

The space is cozy and family friendly. The kitchen is exposed and definitely makes you feel like you are in South East Asia, especially with the bamboo walls in the outdoor dining area.

Prices are very good and the food is EXCELLENT.

We enjoyed Ukoy which is a vegetable shrimp fritter. Lumpia Shanghai was a great complement to the entire meal. This crispy deep fried springrolls with pork, mushrooms, carrots, jicama and sweet-sour pineapple sauce were by far my favorites.

We washed it all down with fresh glasses of mango juice.

With the very warm summer weather right now, what is a brunch without ice cream? It was very hard to decide what to order.  So we ended up with 3 homemade ice cream scoops: Purple Yam, Vanilla Bean and Jackfruit.  Look how pretty these bowls are!!!!

This has made my list of best places to eat in Brooklyn! Hope you can stop by and try it out yourself or if you've been there, would love to hear about your experience.

Amy Ruth's - Harlem, NY

If you aren't so lucky to have a southern grandmother of your own to cook for you regularly, visit Amy Ruth's 😍.

Went for dinner and it was one of the best meals ever. Hands down, this is one of the best soul food restaurant I have enjoyed in New York thus far.

Atmosphere is great, service friendly and the food? Well, all I can say is after my meal and a taste of their signature velvet cake, I couldn't get out of my seat! 😑

I recommend this place definitely if you are in the Harlem neighborhood. But make sure you get in early before the tourist bus unloads!

Meadowsweet - Brooklyn NY

I don't know if you are like me, but whenever I am around town running errands with my husband and 2 kids, I am always looking out for cute restaurant spots and snapping pictures with my phone.  Why? because when the time comes to plan for a date night, my hubby and I never remember that "cute restaurant" we saw when driving to grandma in Brooklyn...Now I decided to keep posting about the places we eat and share them with you.  Hopefully, I will be a reference to you for when you are looking for good places to eat in the area.  Check out my other FOOD POSTS.
Meadowsweet NYC is the perfect location in my opinion, for a date night.  First date, second date....40th date!  The service is excellent. The food is to die for.
Located in Brooklyn NY, Meadowsweet gave me a Bistro/European vibe that I fell in love with. You must check out their website, reviews on Yelp and Zagat. I am planning to go back for their brunch and also try out their $65 - 5 Course tasting menu.
We started off with the baby beet salad with fennel, grapefruit, navel orange, arugula, buttermilk and goat cheese. I had to treat myself with a mignonette oyster! so delicious.  I enjoyed my grilled hanger steak main dish.  It was served with fresh jerusalem artichoke, cauliflower, spinash and green peppercorn.  Hubby devoured his berkshire pork chop with roasted sauerkraut, apple and riesling.  All of these flavors paired with great wine, laughter and kisses...yeap kisses!!!! Now, check out their website and stop by for yourself.  I can assure you, this will be a great meal! Website http://www.meadowsweetnyc.com

Cuba - Greenwich Village - New York City

website http://www.cubanyc.com - On Instagram @cuba_nyc
Cuban cuisine is a fusion of  several other cuisines.  A good portion of the spices and techniques come from Spanish, African and Caribbean influences.  As a result, Cuban dishes have distinctive flavors that will make your taste buds very happy.  With strong similarities with cuisines of their neighboring countries Domican Republic, Puerto Rico and Haiti, the blend of the flavors in every bite will transport you to the sun and warm wind of the islands.
Located in Greenwich Village in New York City, Cuba represents with excellence this experience. From Brunch, Lunch to Dinner complimented with an awesome tropical cocktail menu, make Cuba one of your stops this year.  The price is reasonable, service impeccable, atmosphere Superb!
These photos represents the dishes we enjoyed ROPA VIEJA: shredded skirt steak braised in tomato, pepper salsa criolla, rice and beans and VACA FRITA: pan fried skirt steak with garlic mojo, onions, parsley, lime, rice and beans. Soooooo good.

Republic - Union Square - New York City

Vietnamese cuisine features a combination of distinctive flavors.  From the fish sauce, lemongrass, vegetables, and soy sauce, your taste buds will come alive.
Republic is one of the best restaurants in New York City that offers great Asian Fusion dishes.
On a cold snowy day, stop there for lunch or even dinner and grab yourself a Pho.  It is a noodle soup consisting of broth, linguine shape  linguine-shaped rice noodles, herbs, and meat. It is served with either beef or chicken. Pho is a popular street food in Vietnam.
Southern Vietnamese eat it for breakfast and occasionally lunch, whereas northerners eat it at any time of day. Fanatiqueof ate it for Lunch! Add Republic on your list and visit them. You will not regret it.
